seeing the sunrise
I am getting up earlier this week in an effort to work a few extra hours and build up some comp time. Ugh. A morning person, I am not. Especially when it means getting up before 6:00am. Thank God for coffee.

Well, I didn't win in Bookends first 100 words contest. But there's still a chance for me to be a runner up! Also, this has been an interesting window into these particular agents' tastes - sure when you look at a client list, or a list of books sold by an agent, you can get a feel for what they like. But sometimes I might only find a couple of books that I'm familiar with associated with a particular agent, and that's not really enough to get a good feel. This contest had almost two hundred entries, and I read every single one. I made a document that compiled all the entires I really liked, so I could compare which ones I liked with their picks. Only the winner and runner up have been posted so far, but the winner was among my list of "strong entries", though it wasn't my favorite. The runner up was not. Not that it was bad or anything, it just wasn't among my picks. Since they limit theirs to a winner, a runner up, and five honorable mentions, I limited mine the same way, not including my own entry.

Anyway, the mystery contest gave me a lot of useful insight into their personal tastes, and the paranormal/fantasy/romance one is expanding on that. I look forward to following the rest of the contests. It's also driven home the importance of those first 100 words. I revised my own opening slightly before submitting it, and though the changes were small, I feel it's tighter.

Here's a gander at my entry, if you're curious:

The boy was eight when he made his first kill, and small for his age. Small and thin, with a thick fall of dirty blond hair that brushed his shoulders and constantly had to be shoved away from his eyes.

He did so now, thrusting it out of his face with a brush of his fist. The hand, like the rest of him, was soiled from too long without a proper bath. Raw scrapes marred his knuckles, and they stung in the cold slap of the autumn morning. Vestiges of last night’s tussle for dinner. Hunger still cramped his stomach.

Oh, darn, but the winning entry was one of my favorites too. I wonder what the honorable mentions will be.

At least this got me to rewrite my intro so this wasn't a bad thing at all :)

Well crap.

Still maybe you'll be an honorable mention! There is always hope!

Also, the second one - crap. I just wanted to see the goblin eat the pixie.
