By the time I start a book, there are generally quite a few scenes already written in my head. Sometimes they're important, key plot points, and sometimes they're small (though no less important to me) character moments. Whichever, I find myself writing to them, writing the stuff that comes before in anticipation of getting to this scene or that chapter. Whenever I reach one, it's a mental milestone for me.

This morning was one of those milestones, in their way far more important to me than any wordcount meter. Today's was a small thing, a character moment, but one I've been anticipating almost since the pirates' inception. All the way back when the only thing I had worked out was 'telepathic space pirates' and not much else, this scene popped into my head. And now it's finally on paper. :-)

It's important to understand, before reading this, that my MC has just been reunited with a family she never knew she had - she and Cannon are cousins, meeting for the first time.

“I realize your recent experiences might indicate otherwise, but we actually try to take as few prisoners as possible.” He grinned, spreading his hands. “We prefer friendly relations.”

Friendly. Right.

“What’s happened to the Typhus?”

“Nothing. The Typhus is fine.”

“Then what have they done since Nemesis showed her true colors, and Black Squadron disappeared?”

Cannon shrugged.

“Captain Hades was a bit distressed, but he’s since been assured of your well being.”

“You’ve spoken with him?”

Cannon sighed.

“Look, clearly you have a lot of questions. Why don’t you sit down, we can share a civilized meal, and I’ll do what I can to answer them.”

Mercy hesitated, and Cannon shook his head.

“If I’d meant you harm, I’ve had ample opportunity. Please, sit.”

She studied him for a few more seconds, and finally sat down on the cushioned bench. She accepted the plate of food he handed her – it still smelled amazing, and looked just as good. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d eaten something other than military rations.

“I’m afraid I’ve been remiss,” he said as he crossed back to his desk and took a seat himself. “I introduced myself, but failed to ask you to reciprocate. I’m Cannon, and you’re…?”

She only hesitated a moment.

“Not your callsign,” he said, waving a hand, “ your name.”

Affronted, she frowned at him.

“That is my name.”

For a moment, Cannon stared. Then he threw back his head and laughed, unabashed and genuinely amused. He shook his head.

“This fucking family.”

Hee. :)

OT - This entry made me think of Dark Vision today, and *sniff* the scene where Parr brings Elysia that severed head as a gift was another one of those "small character moments" that I love and adore and write to, you know?

I have a feeling dthon will like that one. :)
