Richard Armitage - come on flist, why am I JUST NOW discovering him???
I blame this post entirely on trixalicious.

Through the magic of youtube (the DVD is on its way, but I couldn't wait for it) I have seen the BBC's North & South.

First of all, my flist FAILS for not telling me much sooner that this N&S is nothing related to the Patrick Swayze Civil War drama of my formative childhood years. For not telling me much sooner that this N&S sports a character (Thornton) very like Darcy, and more, a story very like P&P! Come on, I KNOW my flist is rife with Austenians like myself, yet no one has mentioned the absolute WIN of this miniseries to me, and said "Rhien, you must add this to your vast DVD collection of chick flicks, for it is the best BBC mini of its kind since P&P, and it has the best Victorian hand pr0n of any movie of its genre, and the best lean-in-for-a-kiss of EVER (with the hands on her face OMG).

*points to icon*

Richard Armitage is like this super sexy mix of Hugh Jackman and Gerard Butler - except more intense. Holy crap, he could have chemistry with a rock! (Rather like James MacAvoy, as Trix pointed out in her post.) When his cravat comes off in N&S and he's all disheveled? YEAH.

Okay, so from there (after re-watching the final scene of N&S about fifty times), I had to hunt up various youtube clips of the BBC's Robin Hood and watch them.

Okay, that is a lie. I have lots of words. First of all, I knew about this show a long time ago, and loving the Robin Hood legend a ton, was interested in watching it until several flist peeps told me Robin was without charisma and the show was boring and lackluster except for Guy of Gisbourne. Disappointed, I didn't bother hunting it up. THAT WAS A HUGE MISTAKE.

Richard Armitage = chemistry with a rock, remember? Holy crap, the people that run this show HAVE to be aware of the chemistry between Guy and Marian, right? Tell me they're not completely ignoring that for her to LOVE this whitebread boring as milk Robin? GUY IS MADE OF SMOKING HOT INTENSITY, even when wearing a ridiculous leather duster and rock star leather pants in a supposedly period drama.

(Which - what is up with the costumes on this show? Oh. My. God. Speaking as a sometimes costumer person, holy crap they are bad. Horrifically awful. Xena bad, almost.)

But wow, Guy of Gisbourne. Portrayed not as a dumb-as-rocks follower of the sheriff, but as an angsty, tortured villain with a soft spot for Marian, who is knowingly choosing to follow the crazy sheriff because it will give him a place in society, and power. Despite the ridiculous costume and usual bad smudgy Eyeliner of Villainousness, he manages to be this presence. This show should definitely be Guy of Gisbourne, not Robin Hood. Maybe Guy and Marian, but really, i'm not married to that. I'd take Guy + almost anyone.

I...think I might have to own this show on DVD. Oh God, that is so sad.

There is fic, right? Someone point me to the well written crack, or I might just have to write some, and I don't have time right now! I am on a novel finishing deadline.

Do you have littledivinity on your FL? If not, friend her. She is always taking about this guy and Guy and Marian :) I'm sure she can help you out!

Don't blame me!

For further proof of his awesomeness, you should listen to him read children's bedtime stories. It's weirdly compelling, and the accent is swoonworthy. http://youtube.com/results?search_query=richard+armitage+cbeebies&search_type=

I HAVE TRIED, OH HOW I HAVE TRIED, BUT NOW YOU ARE CONVERTED. And the world is good. GOD I LOVE THAT SERIES. I just rewatched it on Netflix a few months ago and went all ashiver again at Thornton's amazingness.

I've only been raving about this man (mostly in North & South, as Robin Hood is crap--although I expect more proper drooling over him in quality stuff since he's joined the cast of Spooks/MI-5 for series 7) in my LJ and RL for the BETTER PART OF TWO YEARS! *huffs* You wound me, Rhien. Truly. You cannot fault me for lack of trying, and I'm certainly not responsible for the failings of the rest of your flist. ;) :P

LOL! Better late than never, I suppose. Welcome on board the Mr Thornton lust love train.

I'll have you know I'm dl-ing North and South right now, just placing blame early on here.

I can never pass up angsty hot brits.

OMG, it is SO WORTH IT! I think you will love it! :D

Guilty as charged! I love that you couldn't wait until the DVDs arrived and I love that you mainlined the whole series at once - how could you not!

The hand!porn. Oh! The hand!porn! Especially the clasp! That absolutely set me all a-quiver!

What is in the British water that turns men into... smoking hot chemistry machines? I'm going to find a way to propose a scientific study and get some grants going so that we can study this phenomenon more closely.

Honestly, the rock star leather pants are maybe my very favorite thing about Robin Hood, which I do *love* in spite of, maybe because of, the cheese factor.
Stephstephdub on May 2nd, 2008 05:32 am (UTC)
Dammit, I am sure I talked about North and South, and I clearly did not mean the civil war one. You know that I like to point out the hot British mens! My apologies for letting this slip by you, but I was the one who made Trix watch, which made you watch, so in a roundabout way...

Anywho, I keep watching Robin Hood, and HATING it because it is SO VERY LAME with the exception of Sir Guy of Hotness, because even a mullet can't make that man less attractive. Seriously, I would watch him paint walls and it would be the sexiest wall painting I had ever seen.

And do you watch Spooks? Because you're going to now. He's joining the latest season, and the character! An agent who just spent 8 years in a Russian prison, and has to deal with his Russian ex wife. Very SpyDaddy only INSANELY HOT! It'll start up again in the fall, and it is the only thing that makes me wish that summer was already over.

Aaaaand sorry for comment spaming your journal.

Oh Gods! I did not know the Spooks character details and now I'm even. MORE. excited.

Also, for both of you (and anyone else who reads this comment), here's Richard reading an adorable bedtime story (and playing with stuffed animals!) as mentioned above by Gracie:

Oh my God!! He's going to play a SPY?! I AM SO THERE!

Okay, so I watched the first season of Spooks forever ago, and it was fun and I liked it, but not enough to keep up via all the d/ling it required.

Of course, now I will HAVE TO. Do you think I should watch all the back seasons, or just jump in tthe new season?

Also, probably I just somehow missed your N&S posts . There have been times when I've fallen behind on LJ and not caught up on my flist, so...but yes, I am so glad to have watched it now!
Steph: RAstephdub on May 2nd, 2008 06:10 am (UTC)
Honestly, I think you'll be ok to jump right in. Practically everyone who was in the first season is either dead or pretending to be dead. They change up the characters a lot on that show, but hopefully RA will stick around for a few! Seriously, a SPY! And no mullet!!

Scroll to the bottom for pictures of him filming Spooks in London!

You wanted to know if there is fic? Try www.thearmitagearmy.com, join the forum and there is fanfic there for most of the characters that Richard has played. There is also another board for AA members with more adult fiction - you can get the link from the forum. Also on the forum and on the website are the regular messages that Richard sends via the website owner.

For all you non UK people, this working of Robin Hood was meant to be a bit Xena-ish. Like you, an awful lot of us UK people think Guy is by far more interesting than Robin.

If you love listening to Richard's voice, he has recorded a couple of the Robin Hood audio books but much better is his recording of 'Lords of The North' by Bernard Cornwell. Indescribable - you have to listen to know what we are all getting at. You have to be careful because someone else has recorded an abridged version but Richard's is the full 10CD version.

Incidentally, in this drive-by commenting, I feel I should point out that Richard Armitage and James McAvoy starred in the Shakespeare Retold version of Macbeth.

They are both awesome in that.
