Just when I think I have this soldering thing down, I do something like decide on impulse to make my friend Paula a ring, while she was visiting today.  (Some of you may remember, it was Paula who introduced me to beading.)

Yeah.  Let's see:

~ the first ring shank cracked and broke after I tried to solder it together.  I have no explanation.  The solder wouldn't take, and then the metal was suddenly brittle.

~ then I got the second ring shank to solder, added the beautifully made little bezel cup, only to realize that by soldering on the bezel, I had managed to ruin the solder join on the bezel cup and somehow made the ring just slightly too big for Paula as well.  Second ring abandoned.

~ third time's the charm, right?  So, I solder the third (and best) ring shank, add the bezel cup, and all is going well...until, while sanding with my new 3M radial discs via my Dremel, the bezel pops right off.  So I solder it back on.  It pops off again.  Tongue in teeth, I solder the m*****f***ing hell out of the stupid bezel.  It stays.  I sand, I polish, I set the beautiful Iolite cab.  And realize that somehow in the midst of all the sanding/polishing/setting, one side of the bezel cup has a hairline crack around its base - where the sanding no doubt wore right through my solder join.  Sunuva - and then, to add insult to injury, I realize the bezel cup is only really attached to the ring shank via one side - either the other side broke loose during all of the above, or was never properly joined to begin with.

Paula insisted on taking the ring home, but I only let her under the promise that when the damn thing breaks, I'll make her a better one.  It would have to be better, right?  It certainly couldn't get any worse.

I have to admit, the stone did look very pretty in its setting.  But really, I had no jewelry mojo today.  None.

And let us not even speak of the insane  writer's block that has suddenly hit me all frelling weekend.  Like, instead of sailing through the last chapters, each scene has been achieved via a painfully slow wordcount akin to pulling teeth.  I actually took the 'jewelry break' today hoping some of the writing issues were actually due to ignoring my secondary creative outlet almost utterly this past week.  But then, you see how that turned out.

Oh, and, and - my throat is scratchy and verging on sore.  I am catching the husband's stupid plague!  During the week I am scheduled to finish Nemesis.

My long weekend has so not lived up to the hype.

ETA: Also, on occasion, my MacBook restarts itself for no apparent reason, right in the middle of whatever I'm doing.  Like it did just now.   Any ideas, f-list?

Re: Macbook. Overheating? Your batteries aren't the ones that were recalled, no?

I seem to remember that there was an issue with that on the batteries that later on burst into flames. How old is your Mac?

*hugs* for the rest of the post.

Holy crap! We bought them in January - Mark's never does this, but mine periodically restarts for no apparent reason...

Well, don't panic. If they are new, I wouldn't worry, this was a couple of years ago. However I have had issues with freezing up if mine is overheating.

I'd check the Mac boards or Apple's site and look for white papers.

I love my ring..... especially after all the trouble it took to make it.
