Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior
So, I should start this post by saying how much I disliked the CM episode last year that introduced us to this spinoff.  I mean, it was awful.  The dialogue, the characters.  I'd had pretty good hopes, since I think Forest Whitaker is awesomesauce.  But the episode ended up being this huge disappointment.  The husband actually sat down next to me during it, watched about twenty minutes, and said skeptically "you actually watch this show?  Regularly?"  I had to defend CM and tell him it's normally so smartly written with these great characters.

In any case, the whole experience left me with a bitter taste.  I haven't been the least bit excited about CM: SB.  But despite this, I programmed the Tivo to record the first episode.  I figured I'd watch it, see if anything had improved, and probably take it off the "watch" list permanently.

But as it turns out, I was pleasantly surprised, instead!  My first and best awesome surprise was seeing the lovely Penelope Garcia featured as a main character in the credits!  Penelope makes all things better, just by her presence.  So already I'm mildly disposed to like the show better.

Then the show actually gets going. Hmm.  Halfway through, I am reminded of the first episode of CM, back when it was a new pilot for a brand new show: this cast already has chemistry, and the show has a "veteran show" feel - often with a pilot, I think "well, that was okay, but awkward."  The original CM lacked that awkward feel right from the get go.  Similarly, so does CM: SB for me.

~ Crack sniper/special forces/british dude was SUPER hella annoying in the CM crossover ep.  In this, he's quiet, serious, and not the least bit annoying at all.  In fact, he's the kind of character that usually ends up being my favorite!

~ Oh Hai Penelope!  You look lovely, dear.  However, I do wish you had the same snappy chemistry with this team that you do with our beloved BAU.  I mean, I'm not saying I want another Morgan/Penelope relationship - that's sacred!  But more snap than is currently being shown would be nice.

~ We know nothing, and I do mean NOTHING about the pretty blonde.  I don't know her name, I think she may have said three whole lines in the entire episode.  Um.  Do better, show.

~ The gym is an odd setting.  The old guy who cleans it, or runs it, or whatever looks like a possibly fun side character.

~ Shades of Without a Trace, with the "this many hours since the abduction" subtitles.  But this show has a much more serious edge that WoT.  Wonder if they'll be keeping those subtitles, or if that was unique to this episode.

Overall, I am adding it to my Tivo season pass list for now.  We'll see what happens as the weeks continue.

I forgot it started so I didn't DVR it. I'll start next week. You know my obsession with CM, probably. And I've been much happier with CM this season than last. Last week's cute Reid/Prentiss conversation about Solaris will keep me going for awhile. And now there's a possibility that paget may come back. OMG PLEASE YES.

Wait, Paget "may come back"?? As in, she's leaving?? I've been staying spoiler free. Is this some new dip move by TPTB, getting rid of yet another female cast member?

{scream of rage}

GOD, this show's PTB piss me off! WTF?

Oh, that's old news. That went down the same time that they got rid of AJ Cook. Paget was only signed for 18 episodes this season and then she's done. they're reportedly asking her to return next season but she has a pilot-out clause in her contract, meaning if she finds a pilot she's interested in she's free to pursue it.

Well, I knew they'd "scaled her back" (although I haven't actually noticed that this season much) but had no idea it was a "and now we're done" thing. *sobs* She better come back!

Wait. OMG, Thomas Gibson and Shemar Moore might be leaving, too??

No more "Babygirl" Morgan/Penelope? No more Hotch?? The studio better work out those contracts!

Damn, this show is one of my top three on TV, and I feel like it's about to go all to hell. Losing JJ was bad enough, damn it.

I don't think they're losing Gibson and Moore. It's just that their contracts are up for renewal after this season so they have to renegotiate like they always do.

I hope! Still, I'm pretty annoyed that they got rid of JJ, only to intro a new girl, and now they're getting rid of Prentiss...although I am liking this storyline they're presumably going to use to do that.
